Abraham’s story of faith is the basis of Islam’s major religious celebration Eid Ul Adha or Feast of Sacrifice. The Christian and Jewish faiths also have this event as the central faith story with one main difference: Abraham had two sons, Isaac and Ishmael. In the Koran, it is only Ishmael.
Regardless of how many sons Abraham had in real life, the sacrifice of Abraham is a story where the much quoted phrase “God will provide,” comes from. Modern civilization has come to interpret that what God provides is — human needs. On this occasion of Eid Ul Adha, we can contemplate on the meaning of God’s providence as — sacrifice.
