An advertiser was sent to Japan to work on a firm. Eager to see the new talent, his boss gave him the task of completing a story board for a commercial. After passing over the completed manuscript, he was promptly dismissed and was sent back to his country.
A friend of his approached to console the depressed man “You do your job just fine! Why did they kick you out?”
“The boss said I’ve got the pages all mixed up…”
“Mixed up? What do you mean?”
“Nobody told me the Japanese arrange their pages backwards!”
This story shows how one must adapt to certain cultures. An advertiser must consider people’s traditions and tastes especially in foreign ground. If not careful, an advertiser might offend certain people and might soil the name of the company or agency he/she is working for.
